Transport of Airport Baggage Carts to Mexico – Flexible Port Diversion Solution

Challenge

Our agency received an inquiry to transport several airport baggage carts from China to Mexico. The client's initial preference was to ship the units via a Ro-Ro vessel. However, the baggage carts presented several operational challenges.

Due to their exceptionally low ground clearance, driving the units onto a Ro-Ro vessel would have resulted in unavoidable undercarriage abrasion and potential damage. In addition, each cart was significantly heavy, making alternative handling arrangements necessary. The originally planned destination, Manzanillo on Mexico's west coast, lacked suitable heavy-lift crane facilities capable of safely discharging such overweight cargo.

These factors created a complex logistical challenge requiring a customized transportation solution.

Solution

To address these constraints, our team conducted in-depth consultations with the client and carefully evaluated multiple routing options, vessel schedules, operational feasibility, and overall transportation costs.

After a comprehensive assessment, we recommended changing the port of discharge from Manzanillo to Veracruz on Mexico's east coast, where appropriate heavy-lift handling equipment and infrastructure were available.

For those units requiring on-deck stowage, we worked closely with the manufacturer to ensure the provision of high-quality waterproof tarpaulins, enabling full cargo coverage and protection against weather exposure throughout the ocean voyage.

Our team also coordinated all aspects of the shipment, including vessel arrangements, documentation management, terminal communication, and cargo handling requirements, ensuring smooth execution from origin to destination.

Result

Following an ocean transit of approximately two months, all baggage carts arrived safely at Veracruz Port in excellent condition.

Key achievements:

  • ·         Zero cargo damage
  • ·         Zero delivery delays
  • ·         Successful handling of overweight and out-of-gauge equipment
  • ·         Full client satisfaction

This project highlights our expertise in managing complex heavy-lift and out-of-gauge shipments and demonstrates our ability to develop practical, cost-effective solutions when standard transportation methods are not feasible.
